Just figured I'd post a short write-up on my many adventures as a gas station cashier.

1. The first major thing was a traffic stop turned nightmare. Unfortunately, there was never a news story and I could not find a police report online, so I don't know what actually happened. I do know that I saw a car get pulled over across the street, presumably for running a red light. There's a hospital just half a mile down the road, and he was going the opposite direction, so whatever happened must have been during the stop. All I know is that less than five minutes later, two more police cars came to the scene, followed by an ambulance and a fire truck. They all stuck around for half an hour, along with a few other civilian cars who stopped in and weren't asked to leave (relatives/friends, maybe). Eventually, they all left, and the ambulance didn't have its lights on and didn't head toward the hospital. The car that was pulled over in the beginning left last of all, under its own power. No idea what happened.

2. During a break in a heavy rainstorm, a customer in the grocery store asked me to drive her car up to the entrance for her. It was a brand new BMW and I kept squirting windshield washer fluid because I couldn't figure out how to turn the wipers on. None of the buttons made any sense, but still, I got to drive a brand new BMW.

3. Just about a week ago, I stepped out of my kiosk to see a man carrying the fuel hose back to the pump from his car. In that situation, I was supposed to collect his insurance information in case the pump was damaged, but he seemed kind of intimidating so I just went back inside to grab an out-of-order bag for the nozzle and decided to pretend I never saw him do it. The pump was fine in the end.

4. I've been payed with a 1963 $5 bill, which I immediately traded for a modern bill out of my pocket. I also have three ones with fancy serial numbers, but those are more understandable. I can't see how someone would just spend such a unique bill without thinking twice, but now I check every one of them in my drawer just in case.

I worked at a Dairy Queen in High School, and there was a regular customer who had a $1 bill that looked like it was cut wrong at the Mint - the top half was at the bottom and the bottom half was at the top. I'd see it in his wallet every time he paid, and hoped that he'd accidentally use it so I could trade. Never did get it...

I managed to get quite a few real silver coins in my time as a cashier, even a Morgan dollar.

My first silver coin (which got me interested in collecting currency) was a Mercury dime that came from a self check-out machine at WalMart.

I bet you see wild stuff if you're in a bad part of town.

I once went out with a gas station cashier.

Had a girlfriend who filled up her car one day and the cashier was busy chewing gum or doing something else that made it inconvenient to deal with the consumer public, so she hands my g/f her change and says, with a smile. "Have a fucked-up day."

That story always cracked me up.
